H.E. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani - Chairperson
Sheikh Mohammed brings to his role at Al Shaqab a lifelong passion for Arabian horses and a keen awareness of Qatar’s rich cultural heritage and the need to protect it.
His Excellency began competing in endurance events at a young age. As captain of the Al Shaqab Endurance Team he has inspired his dedicated group of riders to many international victories, including a Silver Medal finish in the 2008 World Endurance Championship in Terengganu, Malaysia. His Excellency hopes to guide his team to greater achievements in the future.
This year, Sheikh Mohammed oversaw the opening of Al Shaqab’s new facilities at Qatar Foundation in Doha. These include arenas designed for international show jumping and dressage competitions, and soon a full-service riding academy and equestrian club will be completed. His Excellency is also directing the construction of the Middle East’s most advanced veterinary hospital and therapy center, as well as a specialized endurance training center. Another jewel of the center is the state-of-the-art breeding center for Al Shaqab’s world renown Arabian breeding program, designed as a full-service center for breeding and embryo transfer needs.
As a seasoned competitor, Sheikh Mohammed knows that unforgiving individual commitment and teamwork are required for success at the highest level. As Chairman of Al Shaqab, he possesses a distinct vision for the Endurance team and the organization’s diverse equestrian and equine units. He is devoted to developing new generations of equestrian enthusiasts and continuing the tradition of excellence in horsemanship that is integral to the heritage of Qatar.
Under his visionary leadership, Al Shaqab is well on its way to achieving its mission: to become the global leader in preserving, improving and promoting the Arabian horse breed; to maintain accessibility to the wider community so that Qataris never lose touch with their glorious heritage; and to set the highest standard in breeding, show and the equestrian arts.
